Heavy Periods: When Is Heavy Bleeding Worth Evaluating?
“My periods have always been heavy” may describe your normal pattern, but it does not mean the bleeding should automatically be ignored. If your period repeatedly disrupts work, sleep, exercise, travel, or everyday life, it is worth discussing with Dr. Joseph Leveno or another OBGYN.
The goal is not to compare your period with someone else's. It is to understand what is happening in your body and whether the pattern needs evaluation.
When is a period considered heavy?
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists signs such as bleeding that lasts more than 7 days, soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours in a row, needing to change protection overnight, and passing clots the size of a quarter or larger. ACOG also notes that heavy bleeding can lead to iron-deficiency anemia.
What information should you track?
Write down how many days you bleed, whether the flow has become heavier, how often you need to change menstrual products, whether you pass clots, and how much pain or cramping occurs. Also note bleeding between periods and symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, or dizziness.
Tracking does not diagnose the cause. It gives Dr. Leveno a clearer history.
Why can heavy periods happen?
Heavy menstrual bleeding can have multiple causes, including hormonal changes, fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, bleeding disorders, certain medications, and other gynecologic or pregnancy-related conditions. The right evaluation depends on age, symptoms, medical history, medications, and pregnancy goals.
Dr. Joseph Leveno's women's wellness services in Plano include menstrual disorders and conditions as part of comprehensive gynecologic care.
When should you make an appointment?
Talk with an OBGYN when bleeding becomes noticeably heavier, lasts longer than your usual pattern, repeatedly interferes with normal activities, occurs between periods, or is accompanied by significant pain or other concerning symptoms. Sudden severe bleeding or emergency symptoms need prompt medical attention.
What can an evaluation involve?
An evaluation usually begins with a detailed history. Depending on the situation, an exam, laboratory testing, imaging, or other diagnostic steps may be appropriate. Treatment is based on the cause, severity of symptoms, health history, and reproductive goals.
When a procedure is appropriate, Dr. Leveno also offers gynecologic surgical care, including minimally invasive options for selected conditions.
Common does not mean you have to plan your life around it
Many women adapt to difficult periods for years before asking whether something can be done. If every month requires major planning around bleeding or pain, that is useful medical information.
If heavy periods are affecting your life or have changed from your usual pattern, schedule a gynecology appointment with Dr. Joseph Leveno in Plano.
